RUFUS IS LOOKING FOR HIS VERY OWN FAMILY. He needs an experienced angel who will give him unconditional love and respect him without crowding him. Rufus is 10-1/2 years young! He is a healthy shihtzu looking for a special home and adopter. He is not your average shihtzu as he has some emotional fear issues that an experienced and adopter can manage. Rufus likes to be near his family, often by your feet while sitting. (Although, he thinks the furniture is his domain). If there is a nearby window to look out of, he enjoys watching the comings and goings of your neighbors as well. He loves to take walks and gets very excited when he sees his leash. He is also happy just sniffing and spending time in the yard. When he is happy to see you, he will often greet you with a toy like a retriever does, which makes me laugh! Somewhere in his past he must have had darker times. When Rufus feels threatened he will growl. He may be perceived as moody at times but it seems to be tied to fear from his past. He can be safely re-directed by a willing adopter. Rufus does not bark much but he should be in a home rather than a condo or apartment. When he is stressed he will howl. His howl is not extensive but it is very loud and similar to a beagle baying. It is quite a surprising sound and is not going to go away or change. Rufus is potty trained but he has been marking perhaps from current stress so keeping him in a belly band is best way to keep everyone happy. Rufus us neutered, up to date with his shots, microchipped , heartworm checked and had a recent dental. He will make a great companion to a person who will let him have his space and allow him to be more eccentric in behavior than your average shihtzu. His adopter needs to let Rufus come to him rather than you come to Rufus. If you a interested in adopting him please contact us for an application and a meet and greet.
